What is Hulu?
Hulu is an on-demand video service that allows users to stream popular TV shows in the U.S. and Japan. It is co-owned by The Walt Disney Company and Comcast. Hulu focuses primarily on streaming newer TV shows and its own original content over movies or documentaries and offers monthly subscription tiers to customize your viewing experience.
The platform differs from other well-known streaming sites such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in that it allows users earlier access to popular series from multiple traditional networks. You typically only have to wait a week and in some cases, just a day to watch episodes of popular broadcast TV series after they have aired.
Unlike cable, there are also no hidden fees, equipment rentals, or installation appointments associated with having a Hulu subscription. You can watch Hulu at home or on the go via many of your favorite streaming devices.
What is Hulu + Live TV?
Hulu + Live TV is kind of like cable, only better. With over 60 live and on-demand channels not to mention the thousands of shows and movies in the Hulu streaming library, there is always something worth watching. Along with all of the news, sports, and other live TV, you will also have access to additional on-demand content offered directly by our network partners.
It might not have the catchiest name, but Hulu + Live TV deserves recognition for describing exactly what it is: It is regular Hulu, with live TV streaming added in. This is not a separate product from the standard Hulu on-demand offering it’s the same thing, just with added features. This makes it different from any other live TV streaming service.
While DirecTV Now and PlayStation Vue offer a cable-like experience online, Hulu + Live TV aims to strike a balance between traditional pay-TV and what we have come to expect from on-demand streaming services. That might make it more appealing to those who have grown up with Netflix and Hulu, but that also means it could be more alienating to those who grew up when channel surfing was the norm.
How Much Does Hulu + Live TV Cost?
With Hulu + Live TV, you first and foremost, gain access to Hulu’s entire streaming catalog: all the shows, movies, and Hulu originals that you get with a normal Hulu subscription are yours to enjoy. If you can tolerate ads interrupting your stream, Hulu Basic + Live TV will set you back $44.99 a month after the free one-week trial.
If you want to upgrade to the ad-free Hulu Premium service, you will pay $50.99 a month still much less than the average $107 a month people spend on cable. You will always have to sit through ads during your live TV stream, however. After all, it is live TV, and there are commercials.
Is Hulu Free?
Free with Hulu + Live TV is up to 50 hours of storage so you can record your favorite shows to watch them later. You can also rewind shows that have already started back to the beginning so you don’t have to worry about rushing home to catch the first five minutes of the new episode of The Bachelor.
If 50 hours doesn’t seem like enough, because you want to horde the entire new season of Real Housewives and your roommate wants to record every Crimson Tide football game, you can upgrade to 200 hours of DVR storage for an additional $4.99 a month for the first three months and then $9.99 a month after that.
