What is Ecobee Power Extender Kit? Guide to Install Ecobee Power Extender Kit

In case you have been trying to Install Ecobee Power Extender Kit, all the effort has not yielded a good result. You are very lucky to have yourself on this website. The article will cover in detail things you need to know about Ecobee Power Extender Kit.

Meanwhile, before moving, what do you understand about Ecobee Power Extender Kit? You must understand what it means before you can move on with the installation process.

That is the reason we will take a look at what is Ecobee Power Extender Kit? Then we will now run through the installation process.

In as simple language, the Ecobee Power extender kit is a kit that is installed on the furnace control board if you have only two wires. It is wired with the thermostat wires you have to create a C wire.

What is the Function of the Power Extender Kit?

As a matter of fact, its work can never be underrated. It sounds so simple, but it performs a mighty function. Power Extender Kit is used to connect the G-wire from the PEK to the C terminal on the thermostats.

Not only that, but it also connects the Y-wire from the PRK to another special PEK terminal in the thermostat.

Furthermore, a power extender kit is used by the thermostat to signal a change in its behaviour. Instead of making use of the Y, W and G wires for their normal purposes. It will now use them to control the power extender kit

How to Know if You Need the Ecobee PEK?

Now, we are moving closer, but before then. What is the sign or thing you need to consider to be sure you need PEK? You must be sure you need PEK before you engage in the installation process.

In other to know if you need the Ecobee Power Extender Kit, you need to check the wires on an existing thermostat you had installed. This will only take 4 simple steps:

Step 1 ====> You must turn off the power to the thermostat: This is very simple to do, you can turn it off in two ways. Either you make use of the switch which is located next to the furnace or the breaker box.

Step 2 ====> Check that the power is off by adjusting the temperature: This is very simple as well, but to be on the safer side, you must check to see if the furnace or air-conditioner starts up.

Step 3 ====> Unplug the thermostat from the wall: This is a very simple and easy process as well, just pull it away from the wall mounting plate. Most snap on and off but check to see if any screws are holding it in place if that doesn’t work.

Step 4 ====> Check how the wires in the terminal are labelled at the back of the thermostat:

NOTE: All systems are slightly different, but most likely, you will see 2 to 5 wires labelled Y, G, C, U, or A. If the C-wire is present, then you can use Ecobee as is, without the PEK.

Power Extender Kit Requirements

To use an Ecobee Power Extender Kit, your HVAC control board must have four wires: the G, R, W, and Y wires.

Ecobee Power Extender Kit Installation Process

Ecobee PEK installation process slightly varies from one another. It depends on whether or not your system has a control board. As a matter of fact, here are the steps to install Ecobee Power Extender Kit.

How to Install Ecobee PEK (Without a Board) to an HVAC System

The installation process is simple, but you need to put in a little more effort. As this does not have a board, then no label at all. Since it has no label, instead of simple terminal receptacles, here you make use of wires nuts to connect two wires. Here are the steps and guides to installing Ecobee Power Extender Kit without board.

Step 1 ====> First of all, before performing any action. Turn off power to the HVAC system and thermostat

Step 2 ====> Once you have powered off your devices, now you need to locate where the thermostat wires connect to the air conditioner or furnace

Step 3 ====> Check the back of the air conditioning unit or furnace door to locate the schematics diagram

Step 4 ====> With the aid of the stickers on Ecobee, use it to label the wires as R, G, W, or Y. Please, keep a close eye on the schematic as you go, to help you identify the correct wires.

The reason is that your old thermostat has no C wire, therefore you need to locate the C-wire using the schematic diagram

Step 5 ====> Once you have carefully completed the labelling process, remove the wire nuts. Now you need to carefully remove the old thermostat wires and attach the wires coming from the PEK to their respective locations.

If you are not an expert, please remove them one by one and replace the new ones as you remove the old ones one by one. This process will prevent you from missing things up

Step 6 ====> Once all the wires: R, G, W, Y, and C wires from the Ecobee Power Extender Kit have been connected to the wires in the HVAC system. You are ready to join the old thermostat wires into the respective terminals of the Power Extender Kit unit.

Step 7 ====> Hope you are moving on with me, it is time to install the Ecobee mounting plate. In other to do just that, you need to follow the steps as follow

R wire ====> Rc or Rh terminal

G wire ====> C terminal

Y wire ====> PEK terminal

W wire ====> W1 terminal

Step 8 ====> Finally you need to reconnect the power and confirm that the Ecobee is working properly

Install Ecobee PEK Adapter with a Control Board

Unlike the first process we explained, here we have a board in place that has labelled wires. In that case, the installation process is more simple compared to the first process.  Therefore, follow the steps guides to complete the Power Extender Kit installation process.

Step 1 ====> Just like what we explained in the first process. You need to power off the HVAC system before doing work anything

Step 2 ====> After that, you need to locate where the thermostat wires are connected to the control board

Step 3 ====> Locate the wires labelled R, G, W, and Y, and use the enclosed stickers to label them so they will be easy to work with later

Step 4 ====> Now, you need to remove the 4- wires from the terminal

Step 5 ====> Then, connect the 4-wires to the respective receptacles in the Power Extender Kit

Step 6 ====> Connect the five wires (R, G, W, Y, and C) from the Ecobee Power Extender Kit to the control board terminal.

Step 7 ====> Go back to the location of the existing thermostat, and install the four wires into the ecobee wall mount as follows:

R wire ====> Rc or Rh terminal

G wire ====> C terminal

Y wire ====> PEK terminal

W wire ====> W1 terminal

Step 8 ====> Finally you need to reconnect the power and confirm that the Ecobee is working properly
