If you are like me and you find it annoying to have to pop over to the YouTube app any time friends links you a new video to see, then you will be excited to know that Android Oreo has a new picture in picture mode that lets you keep watching your videos while you multitask on your phone.
Android 8.0 has a new feature; Picture in Picture mode. It is available for any app that chooses to support it.
VLC picture in picture view has already been implemented. You need only update VLC Player to the latest version, and make sure you are running Android 8+ to use it.
The PiP mode lets you use video calling apps like Duo, video apps like YouTube, and even apps like Google Maps in a floating window, while you multitask with ease.
The mode should come especially handy while watching YouTube videos but, sadly, you need to have the YouTube Red subscription to use YouTube in Picture in Picture mode.
The only demerit is that the YouTube PiP implementation requires you to be a YouTube Red subscriber.
The truth is that as far as YouTube is concerned the Picture in Picture view is exclusive to YouTube Red subscribers. Any other media player you have, even Chrome will be able to enter Picture in Picture Android.
If you open a YouTube video in Chrome however, you will not be able to enter Picture in Picture mode. With other video hosting sites like Vimeo, you need only play a video and tap the home button to switch to Picture in Picture mode.
Well, as you might have guessed, there is a way to enable YouTube Picture in Picture mode on your Android Oreo smartphone without having the YouTube Red subscription.
YouTube Picture In Picture mode
If you have a YouTube Red subscription, you can easily switch to Picture in Picture mode. Just open a video, tap the home key and you will get a floating YouTube video on your screen. You can reposition it anywhere on your screen and pause / play the video.
